CMC: Conceptual Music Competition

abadoss-CMC.jpg

This competition is based on the rules of the classic TOMC (Thematic Original Music Competition).

The CMC (Conceptual Music Competition) is designed so that each participant enters a piece of music based on a set theme. The participants take the theme and interpret it as they will to come up with something that fits. Any style can work, as long as it portrays a sense of what the theme is.

Feel free to be imaginative!

Each successive theme will be chosen by the winner of the previous competition. For example, say the theme of the last competition, CMC 20, was "Left Alone" and the winner, Amelia, submitted a piece that knocked the socks off of everyone, so she won. Amelia then gets to decide the theme for CMC 21.

This competition is open to registered members of the forums of

OverClocked ReMix, VGMix, Ormgas, VGMusic, Gaming World, and Young Composers.

CMC 19: Haunted House

"A group of teenagers take a bet to stay in the scary old abandoned mansion at the end of the road for a night, a mansion that is rumored to be haunted... the strange sounds that are heard coming from the house every night only add to the air of mystery. But is the mansion really haunted? And will the teens return to claim their money..." -Ross Birdsall

There are 9 entries for this round...

HoboKa - "Haunted in da House G"

  • "Jimmy John Jr. gets dared by his border line retarded friends to explore the haunted house up at the terrace of their quaint little town of WhackedVille. He tentatively enters the ancient home and is immediately scared; but as he moves towards the center of the house, he hears dance music coming from the basement. Both intrigued and frightened, he descends the stairs of the dilapidated house and finds that there is in fact a grungy dance club in the depths of the forlorn house. People dressed in gothic-like clothes, as well as covered head to toe in tattoos and studs, are dancing to a rather dark and creepy dance song. One of the dancers, an attractive girl who was the envy of all - even the seductresses of hell - bade Jimmy to dance with her, despite him being so out of place in this creepy dance floor; he is compelled to do so... >:-3"

just64helpin - "Beyond the Terrace"
  • "With this piece, I set two goals for myself: Firstly I wanted to make it overtly synthetic, and secondly I wanted to focus on the mindset of the subjects wandering about the house (as opposed to setting the atmosphere of the house itself). Rather than describe the progression of the piece, I'll let the listener interpret it. I will note however that a friend who heard it thought the ending sounded like a funeral organ, implying that the teens died or something. That wasn't really my intention, but I won't deny this possibility."

xGx - "A Spectral Presence"

  • "The small group of teens slowly make there way into the building on this cold stormy night, strange how it seems much larger stepping inside than what it should seem from the outside. Playfully one boy runs ahead taunting the rest to follow him, the group follow him nervously into one of the many corridors that lead in different directions. As they round a corner, sudden movement in the shadows creates unease and fear starts to peak, they need to get out. But as suddenly as the thought came they realised the way in which they came cannot be distinguished from the sprawling chaotic entanglement of seemingly endless hallways all around them... There lost within an endless labyrinth. Confused and the darkness over them with only the light from the storm all they can do is pray to find the way. Suddenly the silence is broken by a loud thunderclap and from out of nowhere the house comes alive with the sounds of Maniacal laughter coming from all around them. They should never of come here. Panic quickly takes over but the presence closes in around them, their trespass in this place shall not be forgiven!"

Ubernym - "Chopin's Ghost"
  • "So these crazy teenagers are creeping through the haunted mansion when eerie piano music begins to play...one of the teenagers ignorantly supposes 'that must be Chopin's ghost or something' and they follow the sound to an empty parlor where they find an old, grand piano playing by itself....or is it?!?!"

Blue.Nocturne - "Ghostly Dance"

  • "You and your friends take a bet to stay in this 'supposedly haunted' mansion, however this was no ordinary mansion. It was classically designed, having high ceilings, grandiose staircases, and even a ballroom. As you enter the ballroom, you hear strange noises, and this is where the song begins. Suddenly ghostly figures appear, upon the ballroom floor, they start dancing. You are both fascinated and horrified by this sight, and you can do nothing but stare at them. They appear to be trying to say something, but it gives you chills. After their second round of dance, they sound a lot more clearer, and you hear them clearly say 'behind you!' You turn around and one of your friends is standing behind you holding a sharp knife. He looks at you with intent to kill, and he charges at you. The ghosts surround your friend and the mere pressure of being surrounded by ghosts causes him to faint. Suddenly all the ghosts disappear and you call the police. To this day, you remember the haunted house which saved your life."

quia - "Lost"
  • "They walk into the haunted house. First it's pretty calm then it gets worse. In the end they get too scared to stay and run home instead."

Ross Birdsall - "A Night in the Mansion"

  • "The piece begins with a small group of people gathered outside (represented in the show by actors, maybe colorguard), shivering in the dark as they stare up at the old creepy mansion. Everyone is nervous, but especially the three kids who have been challenged to stay the night in the old house. They walk slowly up to the door, and the tempo quickens as the door slams shut behind them (here the battery would be marching around the kids, representing the spirits of the house). Nerves flare and adrenaline rushes through them as they explore the house, expecting something to jump out at them from every corner. The kids discover overturned furniture and torn drapes, desecration in every room. From somewhere deep inside the house, a grandfather clock begins to toll out midnight. On the first beat, strange things begin to happen, and the battery begin pushing the kids around as they play, showing that the spirits are angry and violent. The kids retreat to the door by the sixth chime, to discover that it is locked and they cannot escape. All hell breaks loose as the malevolent spirits chase the kids around the mansion, (represented by the battery solos) until finally the kids find a room deep in the house where the ghosts cannot reach them. The music is slow and sad as the teens discover an old photo album, and the mother's diary. They read in her diary, realizing that she was surely insane, about how she killed her family, and the teenager's desperation to escape increases. The ghosts become restless and the kids try one last ditch attempt to flee the house. Weather they escape or not is up to you..."

Nario - "Trapped"
  • "A group of teens went to a haunted house in hopes that they could find the money that was rumored to be there. However, as soon as the teens walked into the house, the doors locked behind them. Not concerned, the teens looked for the money. Searching throughout the whole house, the teens couldn't find anything, and it was to their dismay that they couldn't get out. Realizing that the front door was locked, the teens searched for an exit instead of the money, but they also couldn't find a way out. Without an exit, they tried to find some way to survive, but there was nothing they could do. With no food or water, the teens were trapped in the haunted house and were never heard from again. It is until this day that their corpses lay in the haunted house, and they are a reminder to anyone who could fall for such a temptation."

Zephyr Tread - "One Hundred Haunts"

  • "Every year on the anniversary of the day little Dominic Brant wandered into the forest and was never found again, those woods become different. It is a well known fact to avoid that forest on that day, but one lost weary traveller was trudging on in a last effort to avoid death when he stumbled into an overgrown forest in search of berries and water. It is said that his screams could be heard from miles round, but nobody knows what ever became of him."

Voting Rules!:
  • Voters will be allowed to pick a first place (3 points) and any number of honorary mentions (1 point). Only one set of votes from any one voter will be accepted and a person cannot vote for any one piece more than once. Corrections to votes, from the original voter only, will be accepted, but corrections will void the previous votes. Basically, a voter can vote and correct the vote, but only the final form of that vote will be counted. Send all votes to
Abadoss by PM. Please include any and all constructive critiques (not to be confused with bashing) about them with your votes as well, so that there's always a sense of growth in the artform. If you wish to remain anonymous, just state so in your PM. Thanks.

  • The voting period will last from the moment the entries are posted in the thread to the Saturday of that week. The voting period for this round ends May 17, so be sure to spend some time really listening to the pieces.

  • Any participant in the competition can vote, but not for their own pieces. However, in an effort to encourage voting among participants, any participant who votes will have 2 points added to their voting score.

Official Rules!:

  1. Each piece must be originally composed for this competition. Arrangements and remixes will not be accepted. (Pieces composed by the participant prior to the competition will not be accepted.)
  2. Each piece must be 2:00 or longer and match the competition theme.
  3. Only one entry per person. Collaborations will be allowed, but each collaborator may not submit any other pieces. (This also means that a person cannot collaborate on two or more different pieces at the same time.)
  4. A link to the entry piece must be e-mailed or PMed to Abadoss prior to the deadline set for each competition. DO NOT POST THE LINK IN THE THREAD! However, feel free to post in the WIP:Other forum.
  5. Important: Each file must be labelled accordingly: Composer_Name_-_Composition_Title_CMC#.mp3
(For example, if Elaine Friedman submits a piece called "Today is Just Yesterday's Tomorrow" to CMC 24, then her filename would be: Elaine_Friedman_-_Today_is_Just_Yesterdays_Tomorrow_CMC24.mp3)
  6. MP3 file format is required. Know that even OGG will need to be converted into MP3. (If someone is unable to do so themselves, Abadoss would be willing and able to do it for them.)
  7. Entries should be accompanied by a description and/or story to help listeners understand what the piece is about. (Not required, though.)
  8. All entries must be submitted by Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 11:59 PM - PST, GMT-8.

Oh, don't forget the talking dog that the group of teenagers brought with them. Looks like they've got a mystery on their hands.

But yes, this will be an interesting theme! Dunno if to make it cartoony or dead serious though.

Bloody hell... well, that makes me feel like an idiot...

Double mistake. You might better remove that line, some people take a quick look at the forum, read 'All entries due this Saturday' and think 'Shit, I can't finish it in time' and stop reading the other lines and forget about the first post.
