Absolute blast of a mix from Deedubs (Mike DeWeese), who applies a bitcrushed chip swagger to this swingin' Kondo-esque funk take on "Delightful Spekkio" from Chrono Trigger:

"After taking part in my first two contests over at Pixel Mixers, I was very excited to learn that the next month's contest's theme was going to be all about Yasunori Mitsuda. Chrono Trigger is my absolute favorite game soundtrack and was hugely influential for me as a composer and arranger. Finally, I had a good excuse to do a remix of one of Chrono Trigger's many wonderful tracks. Unfortunately, I was unable to finish my remix by the contest deadline, having lost a good chunk of momentum after a strong start. Despite that, I knew this was a remix I needed to finish. After a couple months of additional work, my Spekkio remix was finally complete!

The original source, "Delightful Spekkio," is a fun, whimsical, straightforward track with two distinct melodic themes. My usage of the first theme is fairly conservative aside from some noodling. Comparatively, I definitely got quite a bit more mileage out of the second melodic theme, using it throughout the remix. I especially had fun with the section at 2:30-3:35 where I developed some melodic and rhythmic ideas out of the second theme building up to a triumphant return to the first theme at 3:38."

The melodies are easily identifiable, but the genre-shift places this in an upbeat, platformer universe, and Mike gets a lot of mileage through variation. Chip intro & outro are well done, I love the blend of harder-hitting EDM-style drums with some *very* funky acoustic kit fills, bitcrushing makes the drums stay crunchy in milk, electric & acoustic piano strut funkily, and a happy/infectious monoglide synth lead gets a lot of sunshine. From an aesthetic/conceptual perspective, this is close(ish) to what I was shooting for with my own Phantasy Star III ReMix from a few years ago, in terms of the transformation of the source into something more syncopated, and even has a bit of that old-timey Broadway vibe at points. This isn't a direction I think most artists would take "Spekkio," but damn did Mike make it work: superb, playful, & creative arrangement + chipcrushed hybrid funk = delicious! Sure to brighten up your day - highly recommended!

This is hot! Totally not what I expected out of Deedubs but this keeps getting better and better as it goes on. The production toward the back half is seriously rich. Love this!!
