Glorious. Transcendental. Resplendent. I am just so damn glad that, in this shared reality we all inhabit, there's now a hip-hop/rap arrangement of Soul Blazer. Titled "I'm the Soul Blazer," no less. Some mixes just NEED to happen, and this was one of them. HoboKa (Alex Shtokalko) credits his co-conspirators:

"We did an RnB/rappy remix of the underground theme for Soul Blazer. BrothaDom wrote the lyrics, but I found his vocals to be wanting, so I wound up hiring Smooth4Lyfe to do 'em up for me. And, man, can Smooth4Lyfe rap AND sing!!"

First off, this is only the second Soul Blazer mix on the site, following a dry epoch dating back to 2002 (!) & Israfel's debut. The Internet didn't even exist back in 2002, and computers had just recently been invented, so this has been a long time coming. Conceptually, this is a win on all levels, but the execution is pretty damn tight as well - slick vocal FX, infectious chorus repetend, sing-song C section, and contextual lyrics:

I know you think you're some kind of hellraiser
but you can't outlast the spirit of the Soul Blazer

This is my new personal mantra.

Sir_NutS writes:

"Man those lyrics are pure cheddar. I think the arrangement is groovy and the arrangements ideas keep the track fresh for the most part, the effects put on the vocals mid-way were pretty cool as well. The whole thing doesn't overstay its welcome either."

Judges were unanimous in their approval but did have some other production nits to pick; I think this is an instance where "strength of concept" clears away most hesitation, at least for me. The actual accompaniment is relatively conservative and leans on the cool main melodic descending motif - as it should - so the interpretation is largely in the additive nature of the genre adaptation. The flow is strong; Dom's lyrics strike the right balance of cheddar & legit, and Smooth4Lyfe sells them. This song's gonna get stuck inside my head, no doubt. Sinister laugh transition to wide-panned vocal FX EVIL VERSE is a high point & creates just the needed variety to distinguish. Alex, Dom, & Smooth have given us a killer tribute to a more obscure SNES game with some great tunes - bravo, gentlemen!

Uh. Gotta level with you, I've never played that one, and I have a vast backlog of games T_T.

On a more relevant note, I'd also have to commission X vocalist, as it takes a lot of time and effort - unless said vocalist is pointed my way and knocks on my door and is very enthusiastic to collaborate, then I might do this pro-bono. Failing that, $$$ has a way of moving things along. *wink wink, nudge nudge* I'm a hobo so....gotta feed my pet rats and shit.

Thanks for the praise kyle.

[Chorus]
I'm the Blazer, the Soul Blazer
Yeah, the Blazer, the Soul Blazer
I'm the Blazer, the Soul Blazer
Yeah, the Blazer, the Soul Blazer

Sent from the heavens with the power divine
I'm cutting down evil with this blade of mine
Ho! Coming to a town near you... I'm gonna save the world, 'cuz it's what I do
But how you gonna prove?
By keeping y'all alive, protect you from the curse, make sure you all survive (OK)
Slashing through every monster gate (Alright)
Liberate from from the powers of hate (Uh-huh)
Master deity, just have faith (Have faith)
You see, your best interest's... to believe in me

[Chorus]

[x3]
You can't stop me, I'm the hero
stopping bad guys: Deathtoll zero!

[Chorus]

Coming from the world of evil... (Uh)
Everything that he does is feeble (Yeah)
Why believe in the man of terror
When you can beat him, trust Dr. Leo (Dr. Leo)
Imprisoned from the king, he created a machine (That's right)
to fulfill all the needs for the queen... (Uh)
Now I'm here, inspiring fear,
Surrender now, don't shed a tear (C'mon)
Just ask yourself is it worth your soul,
Ask your king is it worth that gold (that gold)
I see death everywhere I go...
Ogres' magic to overthrow (Oh no),
So next time you wanna praise to your master,
I'm a discipline of disaster

[x2]
You can't stop me
little hero
Face my minions
Your health zero

That's a lot of talk from the spirit of death
but I'm coming to your lair to end your last breath
See, I don't care about the steps of your plan
I'm gonna make you pay for what you did to this land
You think you're tough 'cuz your power's fiendish, hah
You're going up against the power of Phoenix
I know you think you're some kind of hellraiser
but you can't outlast the spirit of the Soul Blazer
