We'll resume a little later in the day with a couple more flood mixes, but for now enjoy ONE more - an excellent chiptune tribute to Link's Awakening, one of the classic soundtracks of the console AND the franchise, from Hylian Lemon, who's no stranger when it comes to Zelda & the Game Boy ;) Director Brandon Strader writes:

"Ben, or Hylian Lemon, is an awesome fellow who cheats at Mario Kart. He also cheats at chiptune, as this epic opus of beepy sounds can attest to. But who cares whether someone uses a tracker, or other source of chip-inspired sounds? What matters is that Ben always delivers an amazing song, and he always does it in an unbelievably quick fashion. The level of detail always impresses me, and I hope to be able to ask Ben to make remixes for more albums or projects in the future. Real top gentleman."

In case you've never visited OCR before ever in your life or simply haven't previously read anything written by Mr. Strader - yes, he's a bit... eccentric. Mr. Lemon gives us some backstory:

"As much as I love the Oracles, it's about time I arranged something from a different Zelda. I mixed these three sources together as a MIDI about 9 years ago, and I figured I'd take a fresh crack at them in a completely different style: 9-bit chiptune. Wow, what a surprise."

Ben's a great arranger, he's consistently been upping his production game and getting better at DEM CHIPS, and I'm thinking this mix will be quite popular due to the combination of both those talents into a rolling, funky groove that sings, chirps, crunches, and surprises. Super-creative stuff @ 2'22" on "Wind Fish" - recognizable, but REALLY sexy modification to close things out; source works quite well over a syncopated groove. Link's Awakening is a crown jewel in the Game Boy's library; a compelling argument can be made that it's the best game on the platform. In other words, the stakes were high to represent its soundtrack on an album that is in turn representing & paying homage to the system itself. Ben came through big time with a ReMix that meets this challenge head-on and covers quite a bit of ground in just over three minutes. Superb stuff!!

Right from the intro this kicks my ass. When life gives you Lemon, don't make lemonade, just grab this awesome chiptune bliss. I faced this one with joy. And everyone should do so.

Reminded me of the Secret of Monkey Island title theme at first. ^_^

From 0:27, I'm stuck on this mix. Equal parts sentimental and inspirational. c:

My first Hylian Lemon mix was "Essence of Lime." I thought he was amazing then, but this steps it up, wow.

So happy at the effort put into this mix. You can tell someone cared about the source here; it's handled with reverence and the remix highlights it and takes it in great directions without burying it and leaving it behind. Good word, I can't believe how well that jaunty opening meshes so well with that swirling melody from the Face Shrine (one of my favorite tunes from one of my favorite games), and the work done with it around 0:55 is special. The transition into the Shadow Battles is so disarmingly simple I had to listen twice to find it, and the mix of Face Shrine/Ballad of the Wind Fish works so well at 2:25-2:45 I was shaking my head. The only recommendation I would make is ending the song one or two notes earlier in that trail-off - if you do so, it's almost like it's leading into the beginning of the song again - which is no problem to hear again by my reckoning!

You've done an honor to a great game!

This is one of those ReMixes that makes it fun to re-listen with the sole intent of focusing on a single portion of the song. There's a lot going on in there without ever feeling messy, which is just grand. I love Link's Awakening (best 2D Zelda game, maybe?) and this is a satisfying homage to its color-challenged grandeur.

Chiptune at it's finest, honestly. This is a great mixing of sources into one cohesive piece that I'm sure many Zelda fans will enjoy. Chiptune, Zelda, great arrangement and production. At the end of the day, it's an all around sweet addition to the album and Hylian Lemon has shown once again that he can bring it. Cool stuff.

I love how this reps the Southern Face Shrine, rather than the Dungeon music. Good blend of the three themes for any fans of medleys that don't necessarily feel like medleys.

Did you mistake this mix and Rexy's mix? You said hers was chiptune and this was jazzy with strings and ePiano :-P

It was exactly as I intended to say it! ;)

Damn, some crazy development in this! It sounds like swung jazz for a while, but then adds a little string staccato and E. Piano here and there, goes through a dissonant battle-like phase (in a good way) about 1/3 of the way through, then goes back to its jazzy self about 2/3 of the way through, mixing in the strings again and a little E. Piano as well for the ending. Recommended!
